Фабрика Станиславского — Театр
The Theater Arts Studio at the site of the Stanislavsky Factory.
О проекте
The Theater Arts Studio is located on the site of the Stanislavsky factory, a constantly expanding complex of multifunctional post-industrial buildings, just beyond the Moscow Garden Ring, in one of the oldest centers of Moscow. This site was previously used as a factory for producing electrical wires. The earliest building dates back to the 1860s. In one part of this complex, a small factory theater was built. It was here that Konstantin Sergeyevich Alexeyev, better known as Konstantin Stanislavsky, began working on his theatrical "system." The project was developed in collaboration with John McAslan + Partners / Casson Mann.
Idea
The Stanislavsky Theater's site is approached with care and respect. The beautiful brick decoration of the facade walls can be appreciated while strolling through the square in front of the entrance. Its connection to the industrial past is preserved – the iron floor, rough brick with iron inserts, and the dark wooden door cladding. Special attention has been given to the lighting and electrical fixtures, which evoke the industrial heritage.
Concept
Although the building is packed with modern engineering systems, the viewer will not notice this. The spirit of the industrial space is created by the authentic 19th-century brick cladding (which has been plastered white), the ceiling arches in the foyer, and the auditorium.
Construction
In addition, the copper piping and ventilation system were preserved. The main stage was rebuilt exactly as Stanislavsky designed it – done in dark tones. During performances, everything is dark except for the stage. On two walls, there are peculiar grooves – remnants of the old roof that was embedded in these walls. It was important for us to preserve these traces of the theater's history. The theater building still makes a unique impression today.
