About the project
In 2016 Blank Architects participated in the Berlin Art Museum Competition to design a 20th century museum in Berlin. The jury were looking for “ideas that will clarify how the new building and its immediate environment can be fashioned architecturally in terms of urban planning and in the design of open spaces.” The location of the new museum was very significant as it was located close to the majority of Germany’s architectural icons: the Neue Nationalgalerie, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, (1968) and the Philharmonie, Hans Scharoun, (1963).

The idea
We proposed the idea as a partly underground building with a direct connection to the Neue Nationalgalerie, while careful to maintain as much visibility as possible of the surrounding architecture.
